My favicon is a .png, well, actually it's not. That's probably because .png didn't work in IE or somesuch. I do know that .png worked as favicon in firefox for sure :) Anyway, there's a nice little linux util called icoutil that works great for making icons from images and vice-versa. And using the way of doing it, like you have in your blog, is absolutely awesome.
